Rolls Point, beside the Kingscote Yacht Club, is Tourism Kangaroo Island's pick for families: 'always a safe and sheltered spot' with easy access from the yacht club. It is primarily a snorkelling site, but divers use it for relaxed shallow dives and check-outs.
The shallows combine low rocky reef, sand and seagrass. Tourism Kangaroo Island lists zebrafish, eagle rays, weed whiting and western talma among the fish, and the usual Nepean Bay community adds leatherjackets, wrasse, crabs, sea stars and the occasional cuttlefish. Eagle rays gliding over the sand are the highlight. Depths are only a few metres, so light is good and dives are long, though visibility is modest when the wind has been up.
Because it faces into sheltered Nepean Bay, Rolls Point is protected from the south-westerly swells that close much of the island's coastline, and it is close to town facilities. It offers a gentler alternative to the jetty, without fishing lines, and is ideal for children, nervous snorkellers or divers wanting to trim their weighting before heading to the north coast. There is little formal dive documentation, but the combination of sheltered water and easy access makes it a worthwhile addition to a Kingscote stay. It suits snorkellers, families and beginner divers. On a hot summer afternoon, when the island's exposed beaches are dangerous, it is also a safe place to cool off between dives. Bring your own snorkelling gear or hire in Kingscote, and wear a wetsuit – even in summer the water rarely exceeds 20°C. Divers can combine it with the jetty for an easy two-site day in town, and it is a good spot to check weighting in cold-water gear before the more exposed north-coast reefs.
