Meet the site
Silver Drummer Wall is a modest reef wall off Bateau Bay recorded by Muddy Puddle Diver, the Terrigal diving blog that documents local sites. The wall runs roughly north-east, with the top at about 13 m and the base at about 20 m, and the blog frankly describes the top as barren. It is not a headline dive, but it is part of the Bateau Bay reef system that also includes Anniversary Reef Wall, Bonito Reef, Foggy Reef and The Pinnacle, and it fills out the picture of how varied that stretch of seabed is. The name points to the silver drummer (Kyphosus sydneyanus), a big, deep-bodied herbivore that grazes algae on shallow reefs along the NSW coast and often gathers in loose schools along walls and in whitewater. On the Central Coast they share the reef with luderick, rock blackfish, silver sweep and yellowtail, and a wall like this, with a grazed, low-growth top and more cover along its face, is typical of their habitat. The better diving is along the face and base rather than on top. Ledges and undercuts shelter bullseyes, one-spot pullers and red morwong, wobbegongs rest on the sand, and small invertebrates and nudibranchs live in the cracks. Depths are comfortable, so bottom times are long and the site suits Open Water divers or anyone wanting a shallow second dive. Treat Silver Drummer Wall as a local-knowledge site for regular Terrigal divers wanting something different rather than a destination in itself. Ask the skipper, choose a calm day, and plan a simple out-and-back along the wall.
