Meet the site

Spray Point is the headland on the Blairgowrie ocean coast where the back-beach limestone has been carved into its most dramatic form: deep undercuts, great overhangs and, on the eastern side of the point, a series of sea caves that give the site its name. The Scuba Doctor lists it at 5–15 m for Advanced divers and calls it a great crayfish and abalone site, and both are true – the overhangs shelter southern rock lobsters in numbers unusual for a shore dive, and blacklip abalone are thick on the shaded rock. Divers can head out to the offshore reef, a field of ledges and bommies in 10–15 m with kelp on top and sponge gardens beneath, or work eastward along the undercut face toward Montforts Beach, where the Caverns open at the base of the cliff. The caverns are daylight zones rather than true caves, but they are large enough to swim into, roofed with jewel anemones and sea tulips, and home to Port Jackson sharks, draughtboard sharks, bullseyes and the occasional blue devil. Sweep, old wives, boarfish and wrasse patrol the outer reef, and weedy seadragons sit in the kelp. Everything about the site demands respect: it faces directly south-west into Bass Strait, the caverns amplify surge, and the source is blunt that it is affected by rips, currents, swell and strong winds and can be very dangerous. The requirement is the standard back-beach one – flat seas, swell under about 2 m with a long period, light northerly to north-easterly winds after several days of the same – and it should be dived with someone who knows the entry. Spray Point suits experienced Advanced divers with rock-platform skills who want lobsters, overhangs and cavern diving from shore; it is not a snorkelling or novice site.

Topics flagged by the stored research

These are questions prompted by the existing notes, not a verified or complete hazard assessment.

Current and timing
Ask how the operator assesses the current window for the actual route. Historical tide notes are not a departure instruction.
Lines and obstructions
Discuss any known entanglement concerns and the suitability of the planned area.
Water movement
Ask how swell and local exposure affect the proposed entry, exit and route.
Overhead environments
Ask whether the plan stays entirely in open water. A wreck or cave listing is not permission or training to enter.

Historical access notes exist for this record, but have not been independently verified for current use. Request current directions from the operator or site manager rather than following an old entry description.
