Meet the site
The Boulders is a compact, accessible wall dive just northwest of Norah Head's well-known Bull Rocks bombora, close enough to the boat ramp to make it an easy first or second dive of the day. The wall runs north-west to south-east with its top at about 17 m and its base just over 21 m, and true to its name the site is scattered with hundreds of boulders ranging from table-sized to as large as a small room, creating a broken, textured profile rather than a smooth rock face. A mooring exists at the site, though it has been reported non-functional at times, so a shot line or careful anchoring is a sensible backup.Marine life here leans toward schooling species and characterful residents rather than big pelagics: one-spot pullers school in large numbers, joined by silver sweep, yellowtail, bream and luderick, while eastern blue devilfish and giant cuttlefish are notable, photogenic finds among the boulders. Gorgonias, sea squirts and sponges dress the rock surfaces throughout. Being only about two hours from Sydney by road and a short boat run from the ramp, The Boulders is often worked into an easy day-trip itinerary alongside its neighbour The Bull, giving visiting divers two contrasting boulder-field dives — one on a defined wall, one on a rising bombora — within a few minutes' boat ride of each other. It's a good option for divers stepping up from shallow reef work into slightly deeper, more current-affected diving without committing to the area's genuinely deep wrecks and canyons.
