Meet the site
The Bowl is Flat Rock's all-rounder: a site that works for beginners on its shallow rim at 10-14 m and for experienced divers on its deeper slopes, which drop to about 34 m. Manta Lodge rates it beginner to advanced, with minimal to medium current that can occasionally be strong. The attraction is the combination of healthy coral formations and big animals. Hard and soft corals, sponges and gorgonians coat the rock, and among them live cod, groupers, octopus, moray eels and nudibranchs. The larger animals are what make The Bowl memorable. Turtles are common; wobbegongs rest on ledges; and depending on the season, leopard sharks (summer), grey nurse sharks (winter) and white-tip reef sharks are all possible, along with schools of rays and passing pelagic fish. marinelife.org.au lists coral gardens, sharks, rays, turtles, octopus, eels, nudibranchs, large pelagics and a variety of tropical fish. Because the site spans such a depth range, dive plans vary: a guided group might include newer divers staying on the rim and advanced divers exploring below, all returning to the same mooring. Nitrox helps deeper divers extend bottom time. Like the rest of Flat Rock, The Bowl sits in a no-take protected zone, and fish are abundant and approachable. Visibility of 20-30 m in winter makes it particularly impressive, as the basin shape lets divers see across the reef. It is a good second dive after Shark Alley in winter or a first dive before The Nursery in summer. Water temperatures run from about 19-21°C in winter to 24-27°C in summer.
