Meet the site
The Bull, also known as Bull Rocks, is a shallow bombora just over a kilometre off the Norah Head boat ramp that rises dramatically from around 20-22 m to break, or nearly break, the surface — a rock formation with genuine vertical relief in an area otherwise dominated by low reef and sand. Off the main bombora the bottom turns to sand scattered with more boulders, some the size of a table and others the size of a small room, giving divers a mix of dramatic pinnacle-style diving on the rock itself and a boulder-field wander around its base.The site has a reputation among Central Coast divers for dense schooling fish: kingfish move through in numbers, and reports describe huge schools of seapike, trevally and yellowtail as well as genuinely enormous schools of ladder-finned pomfret holding around the structure. Port Jackson sharks turn up in winter and early spring, giant cuttlefish and eastern blue devilfish add photogenic interest among the boulders, and luderick school over the sandier margins. Like its neighbour The Boulders, The Bull sits within easy day-trip range of Sydney and is best dived in conjunction with it, giving a short, efficient boat run that pairs a rising bombora with a linear wall for two quite different dive profiles in one trip. The main constraint remains the Norah Head ramp itself — a rough, exposed beach launch that limits access to days when conditions allow a small boat to get out and back safely. Because both sites can be worked from the same anchorage area, a well-planned charter or private-boat trip can comfortably fit two dives here inside a single morning, making the most of a calm weather window on a coast where conditions can turn quickly.
