Trannies Beach is West Island's easy family snorkel. The official Cocos snorkelling guide describes it as ideal for kids and beginner snorkellers, and the tourism site's snorkelling feature calls it a sheltered, calm beach entry suitable for beginners and families. The name comes from the island's old transmitter site nearby – 'Trannies' is the local contraction. The beach is at the northern end of West Island, a car or bike ride from the settlement, and the water off it is shallow and clear, with sand and coral patches that host reef fish, small blacktip reef sharks and turtles. It matters that Trannies is one of the two small inshore National Park (green) zones in the Cocos (Keeling) Islands Marine Park – the other surrounds The Rip on Direction Island – so fishing is prohibited here, and fish are correspondingly relaxed. It is not a dramatic snorkel, but it is reliable and safe, and it is an ideal place for children and first-time snorkellers to gain confidence before tackling The Rip. Families use it for relaxed afternoons, and it is also a good spot to watch the sunset. Public documentation of specific underwater features is limited, so the best approach is to explore slowly along the shore. Take everything you need: there are no shops at the northern end of the island. For visitors on a short stay who want to snorkel on a trade-wind day when boat trips are cancelled, Trannies is one of the few places that is always workable, and a snorkel here can be combined with a visit to Pulu Maraya on the same falling tide. Children should be supervised at all times: there are no lifeguards anywhere on Cocos, and the nearest medical care is the clinic in the West Island settlement.
