Meet the site
Turtle Alley is a shallow lagoon wall dive inside Lady Musgrave's lagoon, entered directly from the Lady Musgrave HQ dive platform. A sandy bottom at 7-10 m is dotted with large bommies that act as cleaning stations for the lagoon's resident green, loggerhead and hawksbill turtles, and the vertical wall offers varied coral formations and nooks to explore. As the name suggests, turtles are the main attraction, and divers can expect to see several on a dive, resting or being cleaned. White-tip reef sharks patrol the sand, and the reef is busy with chromis, damselfish, butterflyfish, Moorish idols and parrotfish. Hard coral colonies, particularly bushy finger corals, provide homes for the colourful residents. The operator notes that maintaining good buoyancy close to the wall minimises current exposure and maximises wildlife observation, which is sound advice for all lagoon dives: the wall shelters divers from any tidal flow, and slow movement keeps the turtles relaxed. Turtle Alley suits beginners without certification diving with an instructor, snorkellers in good visibility, and experienced divers wanting a leisurely dive or a night dive during an overnight stay. It is sheltered and shallow, so it can be dived when the outer reef is too rough. Together with The Aquarium and Turtle Bommie, it is one of three closely related lagoon sites that make Lady Musgrave one of the most reliable turtle-diving destinations in Queensland. Night dives here reveal sleeping turtles tucked against the bommies, hunting whitetips and crustaceans emerging from the coral, and are a highlight of an overnight stay on the pontoon.
