Green turtles are abundant around Cocos: the lagoon's seagrass beds are an important feeding area and the marine park management identifies seagrass and green turtle habitat as key values of the lagoon ecosystem. At Turtle Beach, snorkellers float over shallow sand and seagrass where turtles graze, surfacing regularly to breathe; the experience is quiet and intimate rather than dramatic. Other life includes small reef fish, rays on the sand and juvenile blacktip reef sharks in the shallows. Visitors to Home Island should ask locally for directions and any cultural considerations; turtles have traditional significance for the Cocos Malay community. Turtle etiquette applies: stay at least a few metres away, don't block a turtle's path to the surface, and never touch, feed or ride one. It suits families and anyone happy with a gentle, shallow snorkel. Turtle behaviour follows the tide: they move onto the shallow seagrass to graze as the water rises and drift back to deeper water as it falls, so a mid to high tide visit gives the best chance. Early mornings are usually calmest, before the trade wind picks up and ruffles the surface, which also improves visibility for spotting turtles from above. Bring a mask with good fit and a snorkel vest if unsure in the water.
