Meet the site
The Marine Life Network lists a site it calls Weedy Sea Dragon Point on the northern shoreline of East Boyd Bay, in the south-western part of Twofold Bay. It describes an easy shore dive over sand and seagrass with some patches of kelp, where weedy sea dragons are common, reached by a rough vehicular track from Edrom Road or through Glen Eden State Forest.
Weedy sea dragons (Phyllopteryx taeniolatus) are found only in southern Australian waters and are NSW's marine emblem. They drift slowly over kelp and seagrass at the edge of sand, feeding on mysid shrimps, and males carry the eggs under their tails in late winter and spring. The site's mix of sand, seagrass and kelp is ideal for them. Other life likely includes stingrays, fiddler rays, flathead, leatherjackets, wrasse, pipefish and seahorses, with octopus and cuttlefish in the kelp.
The site suits snorkellers, new divers and photographers looking for sea dragons in calm, shallow water. Swim slowly, keep off the bottom and don't touch or chase the dragons. Access is along rough tracks and there are no facilities. Nearby Boydtown has historic ruins from Benjamin Boyd's 1840s settlement. Late winter and spring, when males carry eggs, is a particularly good time to look for them. Photographers should avoid strobes at close range and give the animals space, since they are slow swimmers and easily stressed. Night dives can also be rewarding here.
