Meet the site
Wheeler Reef is a compact mid-shelf reef with a pretty sheltered lagoon and a reputation as one of the most varied day-trip reefs off Townsville. Because it is small, a single mooring puts divers within reach of almost every habitat: coral bommies standing in deeper water down to about 25 m, a mid-ground of sand and low-lying coral at 10–15 m, and the reef edge itself, cut with overhangs, gutters and swim-throughs. Near the public mooring (in about 13 m) sits a distinctive 'football-shaped' rock split by a central crack that shelters fish and invertebrates, and on the right-hand point a shallow wall tapers into a sandy clearing that works as a busy cleaning station. Fish life is the draw. Black-tip and white-tip reef sharks patrol the edges, trevally and mackerel hunt along the drop, and coral trout, spangled emperor, grassy sweetlips, flowery and other cod, Maori wrasse, bumphead parrotfish and stripey snapper crowd the bommies. On the sand look for garden eels, razorfish, mantis shrimp and decorator crabs. Wheeler is a no-fishing reef, and local observers noted good coral cover and water quality, with the reef recovering well after Cyclone Yasi in 2011. A site on the reef known as Shark Alley is visited for its sharks and, in October–December, pygmy manta rays, while Student Bommie offers easy shallow bommies on sand for training. The reef also carries history. On 4 October 1981 the timber-hulled dive boat Reef Princess, with 38 passengers and crew aboard, sank here in a storm with 45-knot winds; all were rescued, and the vessel broke up quickly among the bommies near the small sand cay. By 1985 little recognisable remained. Wheeler suits all levels: snorkellers and new divers have the shallows and lagoon, while experienced divers can spend time on the deeper bommies, though light can be poor for photography there and current can wrap around the larger heads. Distance is the catch – it is further than the regular Adrenalin reefs and is offered as a scheduled special trip rather than every day.
