After certification: make a personal learning plan

Turn a new certification into a supported learning plan without treating a dive count as proof of competence.

Your first 20 dives are a useful period for reflection, not a deadline for becoming independent or collecting advanced experiences. These ten lessons are prompts to discuss with a qualified instructor. They do not award a qualification, expand certification limits or prescribe skills to practise unsupervised.

A repeatable learning loop

  1. Describe your experience
  2. Ask for suitable support
  3. Debrief honestly
  4. Adjust the next outing

This diagram summarises the article. It is not an in-water procedure, identification image or competency assessment.

Describe your starting point

Write down the environment where you trained, the equipment you used and how recently you completed the course. Add the skills that felt comfortable and those for which you still needed prompting. An honest starting point helps a provider organise support. It is more useful than a general statement that you passed everything or feel reasonably confident.

Choose one learning question

Pick a question that can be discussed before an outing and reviewed afterwards. For example: “What support would help me settle into this equipment?” Ask the instructor how that question should be addressed and whether it calls for a separate practice session. Avoid creating a long list of tasks that competes with attention to the actual dive.

Keep progress descriptive

A learning note should say what changed, under what conditions and with whose help. “More comfortable after the instructor adjusted the fit” explains more than a score out of ten. If there has been a break or your circumstances have changed, discuss refresher training instead of assuming your previous confidence still applies.

THINK IT THROUGH

A question to take away

You have completed 20 dives but still struggle with an unfamiliar setup. Have you failed the pathway?

Read the explanation

No. The number is not a competency threshold. Explain the difficulty and arrange appropriate coaching or familiarisation.

Common questions

Are these ten lessons a certification course?

No. They support discussion and reflection alongside qualified instruction.

Must I complete two dives per lesson?

No. Read in an order that fits your needs. Some topics may need several coached sessions; others are useful before you enter the water.
