Lesson 2 · Choose the setting

Choosing your early supported dives

Explain your experience to an operator and ask what support the proposed outing actually includes.

“Suitable for beginners” is the start of a conversation, not a complete description of an outing. Different new divers have different training environments, comfort levels and recent experience. Give the operator enough information to explain how the actual trip would work for you.

From listing to informed booking

  1. Describe yourself
  2. Ask about support
  3. Confirm the actual outing
  4. Keep the decision open

Make the enquiry specific

Describe your certification, recent diving, familiar equipment and any practical uncertainty. Ask who will brief and accompany you, how groups are arranged and whether a separate orientation is available. Do not interpret the presence of a professional somewhere on a vessel as confirmation of the individual support you expected.

Compare the full outing

Consider entry and exit arrangements, transport, time on the boat, equipment fitting and what happens if the intended site changes. Ask how the provider handles a diver who wants more time or decides not to participate. You are comparing the organisation of the day, not just its advertised depth or the attractiveness of its wildlife.

Keep permission to change the plan

Discuss concerns before boarding rather than waiting until you feel committed. A deposit, a travel companion’s enthusiasm or an impressive photograph does not establish suitability. If support remains unclear, ask for clarification or a different arrangement. DAN’s refresher guidance supports professional help and a suitable, familiar setting when returning after inactivity.

THINK IT THROUGH

A question to take away

A boat carries a divemaster. Does that necessarily mean you have a dedicated guide?

Read the explanation

No. Confirm the staffing and group arrangements explicitly before assuming a level of support.

Save your own questions in a trip →

Common questions

Is a shallow site automatically easy?

No. Access, conditions, equipment and the actual plan all matter.

Can I ask for a refresher even after a short break?

Yes. Discuss your needs rather than waiting for an arbitrary time threshold.
