Understand the risk
Partial pressure expresses the contribution of one gas to the total pressure. This helps explain why a familiar gas can have different physiological effects underwater. Oxygen percentage alone does not tell you whether a mixture is suitable for a proposed depth.
Understanding partial pressure: what connects
Fraction
Proportion of a gas
- Established by analysis
Ambient pressure
Changes with depth
- Affects partial pressure
Exposure
Pressure plus time
- Requires trained planning
Concept relationships from this lesson. These are discussion points, not a dive profile or emergency treatment sequence. Read the cited sources; qualified review is pending.
Put the knowledge into practice
Learn the calculations in a recognised gas course, with instructor feedback. Use the analysed mixture and an appropriate planning method. This conceptual guide intentionally provides no personal depth recommendation or exposure calculation.
What to notice and discuss
| Consider | Why it matters | Planning or learning response |
|---|---|---|
| Fraction | Proportion of a gas | Established by analysis |
| Ambient pressure | Changes with depth | Affects partial pressure |
| Exposure | Pressure plus time | Requires trained planning |
PAUSE & THINK
What would you do?
Two divers carry the same nitrox mixture but plan very different depths.
Reveal the discussion answer
They do not have the same oxygen exposure simply because the cylinders contain the same percentage.
Frequently asked questions
Why does deeper water matter if the gas percentage stays the same?
The total pressure increases, so the partial pressure of each component increases too.
