Understand the risk

Possible manifestations include unusual pain, altered sensation, weakness, balance problems, skin changes or unusual fatigue. These can have other causes. The important decision is to seek appropriate help rather than self-diagnose from a checklist.

THE VISUAL EXPLANATION

Recognising possible decompression sickness: what connects

Notice · Stop diving · Seek assessment

Unusual pain or skin change

Record onset

  • Seek prompt medical advice

Weakness or balance change

Possible neurological involvement

  • Call emergency services

Put the knowledge into practice

Stop further diving, note when symptoms began and seek prompt diving-medical advice. Call 000 for serious symptoms such as breathing difficulty, collapse or neurological changes. First-aid oxygen, when available and administered by a trained provider, does not replace evaluation.

What would you do?

A buddy feels tingling but wants to wait until tomorrow because the computer stayed within limits.

Reveal the discussion answer

Encourage prompt assessment and provide the dive history. A normal display is not a medical test.
