The first instructor qualification is the beginning of teaching development, not the end. Further ratings should follow a clear purpose: improving instruction, adding an authorised teaching area or supporting the development of other professionals. Compare the actual requirements with the title used in a package advertisement.

Develop with a teaching purpose

  1. Identify a useful teaching goal
  2. Check the rating requirements
  3. Complete the required development
  4. Confirm authorisation before advertising

MSDT is a rating with requirements

PADI’s public MSDT page describes at least 25 certified PADI divers and five or more PADI Specialty Instructor certifications. A package called “MSDT preparation” should not be assumed to award the rating immediately. Ask which components are taught, which applications are included and what experience or records remain to be completed.

Understand the staff-instructor direction

PADI describes IDC Staff Instructor as preparation to assist in instructor development, with MSDT as the entry rating on its public page. This is a different educational role from simply adding another recreational specialty. Ask about the current programme, expected teaching experience and how the training develops observation and feedback skills.

Choose development for the work you do

Start with the students and environments you actually serve. Ask a mentor which development would improve your teaching most and how you will gain appropriate experience afterwards. Avoid collecting ratings solely because a package makes them inexpensive. Keep your current authorisations clear and do not advertise teaching privileges before they have been granted.

THINK IT THROUGH

A question to take away

An IDC package includes “MSDT prep”. Can a new instructor advertise MSDT immediately?

Read the explanation

Not on that wording alone. Confirm that all rating requirements are satisfied and the rating has actually been granted.

Common questions

Is IDC Staff Instructor the same as Course Director?

No. They are different ratings and roles. Ask PADI about the current development pathway for the responsibility you want.

Should every new instructor choose the same specialties?

No. Discuss relevant teaching needs, experience and mentoring rather than following a universal shopping list.
