A new instructor’s first role should be evaluated as a working and learning environment. Location and the number of dives offered are only part of the picture. Ask how a new team member is introduced to local operations, supported in teaching and given feedback.

Evaluate the first role

  1. Verify professional arrangements
  2. Describe experience accurately
  3. Ask about mentoring
  4. Review the written offer

Confirm the professional starting point

Before taking responsibility for students, confirm your current rating and status, the courses you are authorised to teach and any required insurance, local or employer arrangements. Use PADI and the employer for the actual requirements. Do not infer permission to teach a programme from having completed it as a student.

Present experience honestly

Your application can describe qualifications, recent diving, languages, relevant service experience and references who have agreed to be contacted. Distinguish assisting, observing and independently teaching. Ask about mentoring and induction without implying that confidence alone replaces local orientation. A short, accurate portfolio is stronger than inflated claims about students or duties.

Read the employment offer

Clarify pay basis, expected hours, non-diving duties, equipment responsibilities, accommodation arrangements and how weather changes affect work. In Australia, use Fair Work Ombudsman guidance to research the relevant employment arrangement rather than assuming every dive role has the same conditions. Work rights and local requirements need separate confirmation; a training qualification does not settle them.

THINK IT THROUGH

A question to take away

A provider promises “job assistance”. What should you clarify?

Read the explanation

Ask whether that means advice, introductions, interviews or an actual employment offer. Obtain the precise commitment rather than treating the phrase as a guaranteed job.
