Preparation is most useful when it follows the programme you will actually attend. Ask the Course Director what should be completed beforehand and which areas they want to review with you. Arriving with unresolved fundamentals can make it harder to focus on learning how to teach.
Prepare with a feedback loop
- Obtain the current requirements
- Identify gaps
- Arrange targeted help
- Recheck before departure

Use the current learning materials
PADI’s instructor-pathway explanation describes the IDC as a teaching-development programme rather than a place to first learn basic diving skills. Obtain the current preparation list from your provider. Use authorised learning materials and ask how to resolve knowledge gaps; avoid copied examination questions or unofficial answer collections.
Plan feedback before the deadline
Arrange a conversation early enough that additional development can be scheduled if needed. Describe recent experience and any skills or knowledge areas you find difficult to explain. A useful preparation plan gives you a question, an appropriate resource and a person who can check your understanding. Merely reading the same material repeatedly may not reveal a misunderstanding.
Make the logistics support learning
Check document dates, equipment arrangements, transport and daily study expectations. Ask what technology or materials must be available and how a missed session is handled. Leave realistic time for rest and questions. A crowded travel schedule that arrives immediately before the first session may undermine preparation even if every prerequisite document is present.
A practical comparison
| Look at | What it tells you | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Knowledge | Which areas need review? | Use the provider’s current preparation list |
| Feedback | Who checks your understanding? | Arrange help before the course starts |
| Logistics | What could interrupt participation? | Resolve documents, equipment and travel |
THINK IT THROUGH
A question to take away
You can remember an answer but cannot explain why it is correct. What should you do before the IDC?
Read the explanation
Bring that gap to the Course Director or appropriate instructor and use authorised learning resources to build understanding, not just recall.
Common questions
Should I study leaked examination material?
No. Use authorised preparation and ask your Course Director about legitimate practice resources.
Can strong dive skills replace knowledge preparation?
Do not assume so. Discuss both practical readiness and knowledge preparation with the provider.
