What happens during a PADI IDC?

Understand the purpose of instructor development, feedback and teaching practice without confusing it with the IE.

The IDC is where a candidate develops as an instructor. Its value lies in learning to communicate, organise instruction and respond to feedback within the training system. Treat it as a development process rather than a performance in which asking for help reveals weakness.

Make feedback useful

  1. Complete the learning task
  2. Understand the feedback
  3. Practise the agreed improvement
  4. Review readiness to progress

This diagram summarises the article. It is not an in-water procedure, identification image or competency assessment.

Know the programme structure

PADI describes the IDC as the Assistant Instructor course plus the Open Water Scuba Instructor programme. A candidate may follow a route appropriate to prior qualifications, so ask the Course Director which components your booking includes. The Instructor Examination is a subsequent assessment stage, not another name for the IDC.

Use feedback deliberately

After a presentation or supervised activity, write down the specific feedback and the intended improvement. Ask for clarification where you understand the criticism but not how to address it. Keep the provider’s current standards and materials at the centre of the process. Your personal notes should support the teaching system, not become an unofficial replacement for it.

Keep learning and evaluation distinct

A difficult practice session can identify what needs development before assessment. Ask how extra support is arranged and how the provider decides a candidate is prepared to progress. Do not interpret attendance alone as proof that every requirement has been met. Be clear about what happens if a candidate needs more time than the advertised schedule.

THINK IT THROUGH

A question to take away

You attended every scheduled session. Does that alone establish readiness for examination?

Read the explanation

No. Confirm completion requirements and readiness with the Course Director. Attendance and demonstrated performance are different evidence.

Common questions

Is the IDC the same as the IE?

No. Instructor development and the Instructor Examination are different stages.

Can I use these guides as an IDC curriculum?

No. They help with research and preparation. The authorised programme and current standards govern the training.
