Meet the site
Captain Nitro Drop Off is the western end of Spectacular Reef on the Queenscliff side of the Heads, and its name – a nod to the nitrox-diving identity who put it on the map – tells you which community dives it. The Scuba Doctor listing gives a range of 16–60 m and describes 'a series of walls that plunge to over 60 metres in 5 to 10-metre increments' with 'huge boulders the size of houses' at the foot of the steps.
The terraced structure is the same as the rest of the Heads walls, but the boulders set this site apart: whole slabs of the cliff have fallen away and lie stacked below the faces they came from, creating canyons, roofed gaps and shelters that the smaller fish and the crayfish use. The listing records large southern rock lobster and – 'a rare Victorian sight' – both red morwong and blue morwong on the terraces, along with the usual blue devils, boarfish and old wives, and notes that seals and dolphins pass through the mid-water above the wall.
The site lies in the shipping channel, so it is dived on slack water 'subject to shipping': the boat obtains a shipping report and the dive is abandoned if a vessel is due during the window. There is no shallow retreat above 16 m, and the 60 m base makes it, with North Wall next door, one of the standard trimix walls on the Queenscliff side. For recreational Advanced divers the first two terraces at 20–30 m offer a full dive on their own, and the sheltered position inside the bay means it is often workable when the Lonsdale sites are not. It is dived mostly by clubs and by Queenscliff-based charters on request rather than as a scheduled drop.
