Meet the site
Hiro's Cave is a smaller cave than the Blowhole, but the eastern wall around it is described by the island's dive team as spectacular. It lies south along the wall from the Blowhole and Tubes, and the three sites are typically dived together in a single drift. The key feature is a cleaning station at about 16 m, where a manta ray or silvertip shark may be seen circling while cleaner fish work over it. The wall itself is a continuous reef with prominent caves, ledges and overhangs, home to angelfish, jacks, batfish, sweetlips, snapper, turtles and stingrays, and decorated with soft corals and gorgonian fans. Because the east side is exposed to the prevailing south-easterlies, Hiro's Cave is dived only when conditions allow, and many visitors to Lady Elliot leave without seeing it. When it is on, it offers a different experience from the sheltered western bommies: vertical relief, bigger fish and a chance of silvertips. The site suits Advanced divers or experienced Open Water divers comfortable with drifts and depth. The cave is best viewed from its entrance. The eastern wall receives the full force of the south-east swell for much of the year, which keeps its corals robust and low-profile in the shallows, while the deeper ledges carry larger fans and soft corals. Guides generally choose the drift direction on the day according to the tide, so the dive may start at either end. Plan your gas so that you still have a comfortable reserve when you reach the cleaning station, since it is often the last and best part of the dive.
