Meet the site
Three Pyramids is a line of three bommies in decreasing size on the western side of Lady Elliot, south-west of Anchor Bommie, at about 18 m. The Oceanity guide describes the bommies as full of interesting creatures, and the resort recommends it as a macro photography site best lit with strobes. The largest bommie hosts a cleaning station where manta rays come in to be cleaned, and the site is also visited by sweetlips, glassfish schools, groups of barracuda and leopard sharks resting on the sand. The macro list is long: leaf scorpionfish, cleaner shrimp, glassfish, pipefish and anthias all live on the bommies. The linear layout makes the dive easy to navigate, and moderate depth gives reasonable bottom time. Divers can split the dive between waiting at the manta cleaning station and searching the smaller bommies for macro subjects. The site suits Open Water divers and is a favourite of photographers. It is sheltered in the prevailing south-easterlies and dived regularly. In the earlier database pass it was grouped with the Scattered Bommies, a separate group of coral heads between the Severance and Lighthouse Bommies; the two are now listed individually. Leaf scorpionfish in particular are easily overlooked, sitting motionless on coral and swaying like a leaf; ask the guide to point them out. Lady Elliot's mantas are individually identified from the spot patterns on their bellies by researchers working with the resort, and divers who photograph the underside of a manta at a cleaning station like this can contribute sightings to that long-running identification project, which has tracked some individuals over several decades.
