Turmoil is one of the named sites on Great Detached Reef visited on Mike Ball's Northern Exposure expeditions, described simply as hard coral fields to 30 m. Dive Pacific, writing about a Spirit of Freedom trip, groups Turmoil with Perisher Blue and Aladdin's Cave as coral garden sites. The appeal is the scale and health of the hard coral. On the far-northern reefs, remote from coastal run-off and fishing pressure, hard coral fields can extend for hundreds of metres – plate, table, staghorn and massive corals interlocking across a gently sloping reef. Dive Pacific notes extensive hard coral cover across the trip, with whitetip reef sharks and schooling fish common. The name perhaps hints at the conditions: currents on the far-northern reefs can be strong, and the water over a reef like this can be choppy on the surface. Operators time dives to suit the tide. Getting here is itself an expedition: the far-northern reefs lie hundreds of kilometres north of Cairns, are visited by only a handful of liveaboards in the October–December window, and are many hours from medical help, so divers should be current, self-sufficient, carry an SMB and audible signal, and dive conservatively.
