Understand your gas reserve

Returning with gas is the outcome of planning and monitoring, not a reason to copy someone else’s pressure number.

Understand the risk

Gas requirements change with depth, cylinder capacity, workload and the possibility of helping a buddy. Equal pressures in different cylinders do not necessarily represent equal usable volumes. A generic turn pressure cannot account for every route and team.

THE VISUAL EXPLANATION

Understand your gas reserve: what connects

Plan supply · Monitor together · Leave margin

Concept relationships from this lesson. These are discussion points, not a dive profile or emergency treatment sequence. Read the cited sources; qualified review is pending.

Put the knowledge into practice

Have your instructor teach gas planning for the dives you actually undertake. Brief the agreed turn and ascent decisions, monitor often and communicate early. Plan an exit with adequate contingency rather than treating the last gas as extra sightseeing time.

PAUSE & THINK

What would you do?

Your gas use is higher than expected halfway along a wall.

Reveal the discussion answer

Signal early and follow the team’s conservative return or ascent plan; do not try to catch up by holding your breath.

Frequently asked questions

Is one standard reserve pressure right for every dive?

No. Learn a plan that accounts for the cylinder, depth, route, team and foreseeable problems.
