Understand the risk
Agree on the route, depth and time boundaries, gas decisions, communications and exit before entering. Include how to end the dive when conditions change. Two people silently relying on different plans are not working as a team.

Put the knowledge into practice
Use a brief back-and-forth rather than one diver delivering a speech. Ask your buddy to describe the return route and what happens if either person reaches a limit. Write down unfamiliar local information and clarify it with the operator.
